Bone marrow biopsies

Once upon a time, bone marrow biopsies required invasive surgery and all its inherent risks. Luckily, today’s technology allows most cases to be diagnosed using a needle inserted into the bone and removing the soft tissue at its center (marrow). As scary as the procedure may seem, your expert MIT radiologist will explain the process in detail and alleviate your concerns.

Before the procedure, he will numb the skin above the breastbone, pelvic bone, or other area designated to remove the sample, and inject an anesthetic in the area to minimize discomfort. If applicable, he may provide a sedating medication to help you relax. Once the biopsy needle is in place, it is exchanged for a hollowed needle designed to capture a tiny sample of marrow. Afterward, a bandage and gentle pressure are all that are needed to complete the procedure.
