PICC lines

A peripherally inserted central catheter line is long, soft, flexible tube that is most often inserted into a vein in the upper arm, where it progresses to the chest to allow easy intravenous access.

PICC lines are often used to obtain central venous access for patients in need of ongoing intravenous feeding, pain relief medication or drug therapy. Because PICC lines present a lower chance of complications than other central venous catheters, they are preferred for patients able to accept peripheral catheters who may require daily dosing of nutrition, medication, or the regular drawing of blood samples. Your MIT radiologist will use ultrasound or fluoroscopy image guidance to ensure the line’s proper placement. A PICC line may remain in place for extended periods, making it ideal for people receiving at-home or nursing facility care.
